The short version: Intercom is the better product. It is also priced for a company with a support department, and if you are a WordPress or WooCommerce store owner answering chats yourself, that is the whole decision.

Last updated: 9 August 2026. Intercom pricing taken from their published pricing page on that date.

Overview of Intercom

Intercom is a customer communications platform: live chat, a shared inbox, ticketing, product tours, outbound messaging, CRM-level visitor tracking, and Fin, their AI agent that answers customer questions in its own words from your help content. It is built for support teams who live in it all day, and it is genuinely excellent at that job.

We are not going to pretend otherwise. On features, Intercom wins. Fin can resolve a question nobody wrote an answer for. The reporting is deep. The integrations list is enormous. If you have a support team and the budget to match, buy Intercom.

What Intercom costs

This is where the two stop being comparable. Intercom charges per seat, per month, and every person who needs to answer a chat is a seat.

Intercom planPer seat / monthTwo people, per year
Essential$29$696
Advanced$85$2,040
Expert$132$3,168

Fin, the AI agent, is charged separately at from $0.99 per resolution on every plan. A busy month is a bill you cannot predict in advance.

Did you know?

Two people on Intercom’s Advanced plan is $2,040 a year, before a single Fin resolution. Super Speedy Chat is a one-off licence with no per-seat charge and no per-conversation charge, however many people answer.

How Super Speedy Chat is different

Super Speedy Chat is not trying to be a smaller Intercom. It is built on a different assumption: that a small business owner does not sit in a chat dashboard all day, and asking them to is how live chat ends up unanswered.

So the conversation is delivered to wherever you already are, and every channel stays in sync. A visitor opens the bubble on your site. The message reaches your Discord server, your email, or your personal WhatsApp. You reply from your phone by quoting the message, and the visitor sees your answer in the widget on your site. You never opened an admin screen.

Why this matters

Intercom’s model is that you come to the conversation. Super Speedy Chat’s model is that the conversation comes to you. Neither is wrong, but only one of them survives a week where you are busy doing the actual work.

The WhatsApp integration runs on the Meta Cloud API with no companion bot to keep alive, and works in both directions: visitors can start a conversation from WhatsApp and land in your dashboard like any other chat.

Speed, because that is what we do

A hosted chat widget loads third-party JavaScript on every page of your site. A self-hosted one runs on your server, which means it can be made fast, and we have.

Super Speedy Chat offers three request modes: normal REST, Fast REST (WordPress boots with only a chosen keep-list of plugins), and Ultra Ajax (an mu-plugin path that answers before the plugin stack loads). A one-click benchmark times all three against your own server and verifies each mode returns responses identical to a full WordPress load before naming a winner. A mode that does not match can never be recommended to you.

Performance Tip

Test Mode renders the chat bubble only for visitors whose URL carries ?ssc-test=1, and it is gated client-side so your page-cached HTML stays byte-identical for everyone else. You can trial chat on a live site without a single visitor seeing it.

Common mistake

Do not buy Super Speedy Chat expecting Fin. Our AI classifier chooses between canned replies you have written yourself, and returns nothing when none fit. That is deliberate, because it cannot invent an offer or leak anything, but it is not the same capability and we are not going to dress it up as one.

Where Intercom is the better choice

Choose Intercom if
  • You have a support team who work in a shared inbox all day
  • You need AI that answers questions nobody pre-wrote an answer for
  • You need ticketing, product tours or outbound messaging in the same tool
  • You need deep reporting to manage support as a function
  • Multiple brands, SLAs and role-based permissions matter to you
  • The per-seat cost is small next to what the team costs
Choose Super Speedy Chat if
  • You or a couple of colleagues answer chats between doing everything else
  • You want conversations arriving in Discord, email or WhatsApp rather than another dashboard
  • You would rather visitor data stayed in your own database
  • A predictable one-off cost beats a per-seat subscription that grows with your team
  • Front-end speed matters because you already run a fast site

The bottom line

If the question is “which is the better product”, the answer is Intercom, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. If the question is “which is the right product for a WordPress store where the owner answers the chat”, the maths changes completely: $2,040 a year for two seats buys a lot of things a small store needs more than product tours.

Most stores that install Intercom do not use most of Intercom. That is the honest case for something smaller, faster and self-hosted, and it is the only case we are making.

Frequently asked questions

Is Super Speedy Chat a replacement for Intercom? For live chat, yes. For ticketing, product tours, outbound campaigns and CRM tracking, no, and it does not try to be.

How much does Intercom actually cost for a small store? Their published plans are $29, $85 and $132 per seat per month. Two people on the middle plan is $2,040 a year, before Fin resolutions at from $0.99 each.

Can Super Speedy Chat answer questions automatically? It can match an incoming question to canned replies you have written, using OpenAI or Anthropic with your own API key and a daily call cap. It will not generate an answer of its own, by design.

Will a chat widget slow my site down? A hosted one loads third-party JavaScript on every page. Super Speedy Chat runs on your own server and offers three request modes, with a built-in benchmark that measures all three on your hardware and verifies they return identical responses.

Where is visitor data stored? In your own WordPress database. Nothing about the conversation leaves your server unless you switch on a channel that forwards it, such as Discord or WhatsApp.

Self-hosted WordPress live chat with an inbox you can answer from wp-admin, Discord or WhatsApp through Meta Cloud API. Keep the core conversation history in WordPress, avoid per-agent SaaS fees and choose which external channels to connect.

What's new in Super Speedy Chat?

1.14.1 (11th August 2026)

  • Updated super-speedy-settings to the latest version

1.14 (11th August 2026)

  • Visitor IP addresses are no longer stored, and updating removes the `ip_address` column from the conversations table along with every address held in it
  • Added a site-wide daily limit on chat messages relayed out to Discord and WhatsApp, set with the `ssc_channel_daily_cap` filter and reported in wp-admin when it is reached
  • Chat sessions now use a visitor token issued by your own site, so a conversation is only ever started under a key the site generated
  • WhatsApp webhook requests that fail their signature check are logged once a minute per reason rather than once each, which keeps genuine entries in the 25-entry activity log
  • The Ultra Ajax status check moved from `yoursite.com/?is_ssc_ultra_ajax_active` to `yoursite.com/wp-json/ssc/v1/?is_ssc_ultra_ajax_active`
  • The benchmark's full-load comparison now uses a one-off secret, matching the Fast and Ultra comparisons
  • Tested up to WordPress 7.0
